Prelude
A week before I gave birth, my brother ask a friend to send me her home birth stories. In the e-mail she sent me she said "Neither of my births were "perfect" but they were both amazing." I can now say, I know exactly what she means. My home birth experience was everything I could have asked for, but it was not perfect and I'm not going to sugar coat the story to make home births look perfect, but I will never EVER regret my choice to have a home birth.
I decided to record the whole story in one blog post. I did this for my record, it's a very long story and so I broke it down into sections just in case you want to just read certain sections. With that said, I hope you enjoy my story.
Early Labor (Monday August 15, 2011)
Monday morning was like every other morning. James went to work, and Gwenevere and I started our day like any other day. Around 11am Gwenevere was sick of being in the house and it was time to get out. We called our friend Tanya and asked if they wanted to play at a park. Tanya had just gotten home from a busy morning and suggested we just hang out at her house for lunch. I wasn't really feeling well and a visit at a friend's house sounded nicer than the park so Gwenevere and I went over to Tanya's house.
The Girls played with play dough and Tanya and I talked birth stories. When it was time to leave Tanya offered to let me borrow some movies. I had once read that a good cry could bring on labor. So I went through her movies and pick a few movies that I thought I would get a good cry from.
I took Gwenevere home and tried laying her down for a nap. She was overly tired and putting her down for a nap was going to be a battle. I didn't feel like a fight so instead I let Gwenevere lay in my bed and watch a movie on the computer while I watched a movie on the couch.
It worked, I watched "A walk to Remember" and I cried like a baby. When the move was over, Gwenevere was really tired and out of control. We rocked in her rocking chair and cuddled but nothing was working. So at 4 o'clock when I was at my wits end I put Gwenevere in the car and drove to James' work. James wouldn't get off work until 5:30 but, like I had hoped, Gwenevere feel asleep on the drive to his work so I figured I would just park the car in the shade and let her sleep. With a soft breeze coming through the car windows I fell asleep too. It was a peaceful sleep.
When James got off work, Gwenevere and I woke up, all of a sudden I didn't feel well, I was moody and not comfortable sitting in the car. (I probably was moody all day long, but this was the first time I noticed how moody I really was.) For some reason the car ride home was the most uncomfortable ride I remember ever experiencing. The seat was uncomfortable, hard and lumpy and I couldn't get the seat angled just right, the 10 minute drive took FOREVER.
When we got home I put James to work doing all kinds of Apartment maintenance while I cooked dinner. Around 6:30 pm it hit me, maybe the random cramping and discomfort I was feeling where contractions. I looked at the clock it about about 6:30 when I started to feel a cramp coming on. It soon disappeared and about 15 minutes later another one came. by 7:30 I decided I better start making a plan. I called Tanya. Tanya had offered to watch Gwenevere when I went into labor. I had had contractions off and on again over the last few days so I wasn't sure if this was real deal. I just wanted to give her a heads up. I figured we would keep Gwenevere with us until about 10pm and if at that time I was still feeling contractions we would bring Gwenevere over to Tanya's house.
Tanya had a better idea. She suggested having Gwenevere over for a sleep over party with Aliya, that way they could have a practice night before the baby came. I liked that idea, so I talked to James and he thought it was a GREAT idea. Kevin and Tanya came to pick up Gwenevere around 8pm we visited for a while and then they took Gwenevere.
James and I went back inside and started preping everything for our home birth. It was then that I realized my favorite pants where dirty. This wasn't going to work, I needed a pair of pants I could wear while I was in labor and my favorite ones where dirty. So James took me to Fred Myers so I could get new ones. He really is the best husband ever.
The contractions started to get a little closer together, and I started getting excited. Tonight is the night we're going to have this baby. James took the lead and started recording each time I had a contraction.

The contractions continued to be about 7-10 minutes apart until about 3:30am at which point it dropped down to every 20-30 minutes. I was pretty bummed, but grateful for the opurtunity to sleep. At 6:00 I woke up and couldn't sleep anymore, James and I went on a walk to see if that would bring the contractions back. The sun was rising and the air was warm, the walk was so pleasant I didn't want it to end. We stayed close to home just in case my water broke or the contractions came back fast. After an hour of walking my contractions where kinda back but not enough to say I felt like I was in labor.
This is when things got a little harder emotionally for me.
Tuesday Morning (August 16, 2011)
James and I walked back home, ate breakfast and decided it was best for James to go into work that morning. I was so disappointed I hadn't progressed like I thought I would. Last night I thought I would be having a baby but this morning I was once again disappointed. I began to question my body's ability to go into labor. Maybe I was like my mom and would have to be induced to go into labor?
My heart sank. "This was not the plan." I had repeated this phrase over the past three weeks, James wasn't suppose to get sick, I was supposed to have my baby while my mom was in town, and now this. I had to get control of myself, I wasn't going to let myself brake down emotionally just because it wasn't turning out the way I had thought. I reminded myself of the blessing James gave me just a week before. "Have faith in your body, enjoy the time that you have with your mom, and your baby will come sooner than later."
I gave James a kiss goodbye as he headed out the door for work. "Call me when you need me and I'll come back immediately" where the words of comfort James told me as he left for work.
After James left, I went back to bed. I slept for an hour and than woke up. I needed to call Tanya and let her know that nothing had happened. I rehearsed the conversation in my head to make sure I could get through it without crying. Then I took a deep breathe and pushed call on my phone. Kevin answered the phone, Tanya must be busy. I began to explain that my labor had not progressed through the night like I had hoped. I couldn't keep it together, I started crying, I tried to explain that James had gone into work and I was wondering if Gwenevere could hang out for a little while. Kevin being super patient while I tried to compose myself assured me Gwenevere would be just fine hanging out with them for the day. Then he quickly gave the phone to Tanya. Tanya offered to come stay with me so I wasn't alone but I figured Kevin would need her help with all three kids and I really didn't feel like having anyone around.
After the phone call I watched a movie and slept a little bit, as much as I could. My contractions started to come back and by 1:00 pm. I felt like I better start keeping track of my contractions. The contractions were about 12 minutes apart. I called James while he was on his lunch break. The contraction weren't to the point I wanted him to come home yet, but by 2pm I felt I needed assistance (I couldn't stand making mental notes of when each contraction began).
I still didn't want to make James come home from work since the contractions where still 10 minutes apart, so I called up Tanya and asked if she would be willing to come over for a while. Tanya came right over with baby Abram, we watched some Gilmore Girls and thankfully Tanya took over documenting contractions.
Around 4:00pm I wanted to walked to Albertsons to get some protien shakes. The walking felt good, I bought some shakes and then we decided to walk over to Papa Merphys and get a pizza for dinner. By this time it was 4:30 and I was ready for James to come home. While Tanya bought the pizzas I called James and the converstation didn't go exactly like i thought it would.
It went something like this:
Me: Hi James, How are you?
James: I'm good, How are you?
Me: My contractions are still about 10 minutes apart but I think I might be ready for you to come home after your finish with your next patient. (thinking he was with a patient when I called)
James: Well, I don't have another patient until 6:00pm and I'm doing paper work right now.
Me: Ok. (not sure what that means.) So do you think you'll come home before your last patient or do you plan to stay until 7:00pm?
James: I don't know what would you like?
My thoughts: "I want you to come home now but maybe I can last till 7pm, the way this labor has gone on forever who knows how long it will last."
Me: I don't know, maybe you can finish up your paper work and then come home.
James: Ok, call me if you need me home sooner.
Me: Okay, I love you,
James: I love you too.
Me: bye
James: bye
I hung up the phone. Tanya asked if James was going to come home. I didn't know. I didn't think he would stay till 7pm but then again I wasn't sure he was going to come home asap either. I was kinda disappointed.
I told Tanya to call Kevin. I figured if we were going to eat pizza we might as well feed everyone. I was missing Gwenevere too, I wanted to see her again.
By 5:30 I couldn't stand it anymore, I called James again. This time I was more direct in my wording.
Me: I'm ready for you to come home now.
James: oh, Okay, I be there in a minute.
I felt much better. Kevin brought the girls over, Tanya cooked the pizza, and I walked the hallway through each contraction. I'm sure Kevin and Tanya thought I was crazy but it worked. James got home around 6:00pm we all ate pizza and I had a chance to say goodbye to Gwenevere again.
By 6:30pm I wasn't really in the mood to be around people anymore, my contractions where about 7-10 minutes apart and a little more intense. I decided to go take a bath. Gwenevere came into the bathroom and asked to take a bath with me. We'd stopped taking baths with Gwenevere for a while but at that moment I knew it would probably be the last one on one time I would have with my little girl. So she took off her clothes "All by myself, mom" and joined me in a bubble bath. Tanya cleaned up from dinner and Kevin and James cleaned up the living room.
Our bubble bath wasn't long since I knew Tanya and Kevin were ready to go but that last little minute tea party with bubbles and my baby girl will be forever one of my favorite memories.
Once Kevin and Tanya left, I spent the next hour or so just trying to get comfortable.
By 8:00pm I was beginning to wonder if I had made any progress. James checked. James concluded that I was probably now about 7 cm dilated and the baby's head was "much lower".
The Delivery
James then got onto Facebook and contacted Sarah.
Introduction: Let me take a minute to introduce Sarah. Sarah is my visiting teaching partner and a close friend of mine. Over the last few years Sarah has been going to school to become a Midwife. When I found out I was pregnant and decided to have a midwife, I asked Sarah if she would be willing to assist in the process. Her knowledge and experience is above all other midwifery students I have met. Whenever I had a question or wanted a second option on anything Sarah was the one I would turn to. Sarah did every other prenatal check up right here in my home. I'm so glad I had Sarah on board for my birthing experience, she calmed my fears when things didn't look good and continually encouraged me to seek out personal revelations in my process.
James messaged Sarah and said "Just checking in, Elizabeth is making Progress"
Sarah responded "Great. Would you like me to stop by?" and than a few minutes later called us.
We told Sarah that we thought I was about 7 cm dilated but my contractions where still 7-10 minutes apart and we weren't sure if we should call Charlene (my midwife) yet. Sarah recommend giving Charlene a call just to let her know, and then suggested that she could come over and check things out.
So that's what we did. Charlene was on her way to a friends recital in East Seattle. We explained that we didn't think I would have the baby right away, but thought it was a good idea to give her a heads up. Charlene said she would go to the recital and than come straight down. She figured she could get to our place within an hour and a half, but she said she would come right away if we felt we needed her sooner. Both James and I agreed we probably had another hour and a half before she would be needed.
Around 9pm Sarah came over. She helped James get the birthing tub ready. She set up supplies and helped me to get comfortable. Charlene showed up right around 10:00 she brought with her Marie another Midwifery student who was interning with Charlene. Marie is amazing. From the first time I met her I felt a motherly connection to her. A few weeks before labor I asked Charlene if Marie could be at the birth. And so I was excited to see Marie and Charlene together.
Once everyone was settled in, Charlene examined me. She said that I at least 7cm dilated if not more, the bag of water was so bulgie she could not feel the back of my cervix. However the front of my cervix felt stuck. Charlene recommended bouncing on a birthing ball or trying to stay in a hands and knees potions to see if the weight of the baby's head could push the last little cervix out of the way. I jumped at the opportunity to do more for my labor. First I tried the ball for a while, than finally Sarah suggested I get into the birthing pool to see what I thought of it.
Before getting into the pool, I looked over at James and my heart melted. He had been up all night (monday night), went to work all day and was now trying so hard to stay awake. I wasn't going to have the baby anytime real soon, so I suggested that James go get some sleep in another room. I would make sure someone woke him up when the time got closer. James look relieved, he grabbed his pillow, gave me a kiss and went into the other room.
The birthing pool was around 100 degrees and felt oh so good. I was in heaven. I was so relaxed I couldn't tell if I was having contractions or not. After a while I started to worry that my labor would slow down again I got out of the tub and walked around for a while just to make sure I was still having contractions. I was but they weren't as strong as before. Oh no, I thought to myself. Now everyone is here and of course, I'm going to stop having contractions. I started to panic, what if my body isn't capable of going into labor, what if I'm like my mom and I need to have pitocin to get labor going?
grrrr I was frustrated, this whole labor was not what I had planned. And I was constantly reminding Heavenly Father of this. I'm sure he was looking down at my and was laughing, I could almost here him say "Of course this is not what you planned, this is my plan now relax and enjoy yourself, you're having a baby."
Sarah could see I was getting frustrated. I even asked Sarah how long she normally was at a birth. When she replied at least 9 hours, I felt a little better: we where going on hour 3; I still had time.
Finally around midnight, Sarah suggested I lay down and get some sleep. I felt exhusted sleep sounded nice. Everyone else except Sarah was sleeping I figured it wouldn't hurt to try and sleep. Sarah brought James back into the room. He was confussed as Sarah guided him to the bed. James asked me what was going on. I told him I was going to try and sleep for a little bit, and if I was going to sleep I might as well be sleeping by him. he gave me a smile and we cuddled up next to each other. The next thing I knew I was awake, I was having a contraction and I was ready for labor.
It was about 1am, I went to the rest room and cleaned out my bowls. Sitting on the toilet felt good. Each contraction was intense, I sat on the toilet for a good 20 minutes. I kept feeling a comforting feeling knowing I was in my own home. I felt safe and in control. It was the best feeling ever.
Sarah decided to explain to me the poccess of delivery a baby while sitting on the toilet, just in case I decided to give birth that way. I could feel the time was getting close, but my water had not broken yet. With each contraction I said to myself "Brake stupid water, brake". I wanted to be sitting on the toilet when my water broke. Earlier that day James had told me that one of his patients had told him most women have their water brake while sitting on the toilet. I thought that was a good idea, but my water sack wasn't cooperating.
After some really intense contractions, Charlene suggested I try the birthing pool again. I was a little bit nervous to get back into the tub. I'm not sure why that was my first instint but than I reminded myself how nice it felt and I got back into the pool.
Ah, it was nice. Have I mentioned how nice it is to labor in a birthing pool? Every women should labor in a birthing pool, it's amazing.
I rotated between a sitting potion and a hands and feet potions with each contractions. I couldn't tell which way felt better. I felt a lot of lower back pressure so I had James rub my back as hard as he could.
In between contractions we made small talked, and laughed about what our neighbors were possibly thinking. I had mentioned to both neighbors that we were going to have a home birth but I also told them we would let them know when the time got close so they didn't worry. We decided since it was 2:00 am it was probably best to just let them wonder.
I had another contraction, this time I thought I felt a small pop. I asked Sarah if my water had broken, she wasn't sure. With each contraction I could tell it was getting closer. I asked James to get the mirror. I wanted to see everything. I wanted to see Grace's head crowning, I wanted to know when to push and how hard to push. I wanted to be in control just like Gwenevere's birth. James got the mirror, Grace's head was still about an inch from crowning. I had some time.
Slight digression: Have you ever experienced something in so many ways all at once. The experience is so clear and intense yet almost comprehensible? If you don't know what I mean I'm not sure I can explain it to you, but this moment was that kind of moment.
With my next contraction I decided to push. At first it felt good but then it got stronger. As fast as I could i repeated "Stop, stop stop stop". I was no longer in control. I tried to stop pushing but the pressure presisted. Sarah had her hand down supporting my perineum helping to reducing tearing. I literally thought Sarah was using her fingers to separate the lower back side of my pelvis. at the top of my lungs I yelled "STOOOOOOOOOOOP". I gave in and just let me body go. it was in this moment that I was no longer looking down at my stomach yelling, (even though that's exactly what I was doing.) Instead I was a third party observer. I could see Grace's head coming out in one push. And in my mines eye I could see, Grace's spirit jumping down off of Heavenly Father's lap, yelling goodbye as she ran to meet her mortal body. While I was yelling Stop, Grace was yelling GO. She was ready and she wasn't going to wait a moment longer.
In that one push Grace's head was out. The sack was still around her head, it was amazing. Only a few days earlier, I had found a water birth video online, were the woman delivered a baby in the sack, it was one of the coolest things I'd ever saw and here I was experiencing that exact same thing.
I was so excited. "Quick, someone take pictures."
Sarah felt around the neck to make sure the cord wasn't wrapped around it, it was clear. She then tore open the sack and with one more push, Grace was out.
I reached down and pulled Grace out of the water. Her eyes where open, she looked at me, took her first breath and started coughing. She was here, she was finally here. Grace began to cry, and I began to laugh. What a character she was. I could just feel her excitement to come earth.
While we waited for the cord to stop pulsing, Charlene gave me an injection of pitocin to help the uterus contact and hopefully prevent too much blood loss. The cord stopped pulsing and Sarah asked James if he would like to cut the cord. He did.
Once James had cut the cord I was able to bring Grace up closer. The three of us were together and that's all that matter for the moment.
We waited for the placenta to be delivered and then I handed Grace to James while I got out of the birthing pool.
The After Birth
I got into bed, Sarah examined me: I had no tears. I was shocked. Are you sure? With how fast everything happened I was sure I had turn. I was so excited to hear the good news.
Then it hit me. "When was she born?" I started to panic, When Gwenevere was born no one took note of the time, it wasn't till 12:05 when I asked the doctor what time Gwenevere was born. No one knew for sure. "it was about 5 minutes ago" one nurse suggested and that is how Gwenevere got her birth time. I didn't want to have to guess again. My fear was short lived, Charlene quickly responded 2:46 AM.
James climbed in bed with me and the midwifes said they would leave us along for a while so we could bond. Right before Sarah closed the door behind her I told her I thought I felt something dripping. Sarah came back in to take a look. This is were things went down hill. I had several blood clots laying on the bed next to me. I had seen this picture before, right after my D&C almost a year and a half ago. "oh boy" i thought to myself, "Here we go"
Sarah called for Charlene, Charlene came in, saw the blood clots and immediately started putting pressure on my stomach. Blood started gushing out of me. I was calm and felt that everything would be alright, but the look on James' face made me so sad. He was in horror and there was nothing I could do to ease his fears. As Charlene applied pressure on my stomach Sarah once again examined everything checking and double checking to make sure a artery hadn't been turn. I bled for a good 10 minutes. The blood clots didn't seem to let up or end. I really don't recall a lot, I was just calm and relaxed, I kept trying to tell James everything was okay, but I don't think he could hear me.
Once everything was under control and I had stopped bleeding, I just laid in bed and rested. They gave me Grace and I fed her. After the feeding, Sarah asked I wanted to go get cleaned up. I thought that was a good idea. I gave Grace to Marie and James helped me up. I sat up slowly, Sarah talked me through everything, "We are going to take it real slow" She said. "I want you to just sit here at the edge of your bed to make sure everything is okay". I started feeling light headed, Sarah said "Elizabeth look at me." That's when I lost control I leaned up against James and felt myself slipping away into a deep dream. The dream was more of an imagine. I saw my brother in law Heinrich in his ruby uniform, the image was blurry but that's what I thought I saw.
As I tried focusing on the blurry image I began to see James, He was staring over me, I was laying down and he was saying my name. What just happened. It took me a minute to remember where I was and what I was doing. I had just given birth, "oh that's right".
Sarah explained to me that I had fainted. That was interesting. Everyone agreed it would be best if I stay laying down for the time.
Charlene asked James to give me a Priesthood blessing. The blessing was comforting and after the blessing
Charlene suggested I get more liquids in me, so she brought me more water to drink, I drank about four water bottles, while I was drinking water, Charlene suggested I also get an IV to help keep me hydrated. At this point I didn't care what they wanted to do. Charlene attempted an IV but my vain calapsed before she could get it in, She tried again at a second location and then a third time but to no success. Finally she used a butterfly needle to administer the IV, it worked. As Sarah held the IV bag, Charlene rubbed my arm, she asked me to imagine a light going through my body bringing healing powers with it. "Think of it being the light of Christ" she said. I won't go into to much detail but it worked. Shortly afterwards, my vain once again rejected the IV. Charlene was perplex, she said sometimes the body just rejects it. I felt like my body new what it was doing. I once agai recalled the words of the blessing James gave me a week earlier: "trust in your body".
I rested for a bit and then Sarah asked if I could pee. They wanted me to pee in bed because they didn't want me sitting up. thank goodness we had a plastic sheet on the bed. I'm a pretty good peer and so when I found myself having difficulties peeing I thought something might be wrong. They let me try to pee for a good half an hour and then finally Charlene suggested I get a catheter. Yes! That's what I needed, but I had no idea what it felt like to have a catheter. My anxiety went up as they got everything preped. I must admit this was my low point. To be completely honest, I screamed as they put the catheter in, I had a kink in my urinary track and it hurt like hell as they pushed the catheter through the kink. When they got the catheter in and I was finally able to pee, I knew it was all over.
After the catheter was over Marie brought me and James sandwiches to eat.
It was now 6am and it was time to do the newborn screening. Watching Charlene examine Grace was awesome, she was so gentle and thorough and talked to Grace the entire time. Charlene gave Grace back to me and I nursed her while Sarah gave Grace the Vitamin K injection. Grace didn't notice a thing she kept eating while the shot was administered and Sarah went really slow to make sure it wasn't too painful for Grace. James even got to weigh Grace: 7lbs 8oz, length 20 inches, head circumference 34cm and Chest 31 cm. It was the best examination I could have ever imagined.

After the newborn examination, all three ladies got to work cleaning up everything, bloody towels where put in the washing machine, bowls, and other utensils where put in the dishwasher and started. Sarah helped James drain the birth pool and by 7am you could hardly tell a birth had took place. The ladies left one at a time. Charlene had clinic she had to get back to, Sarah had to go home and get some rest before her kids woke up and Marie went home to rest as well.
Once everyone had left, James and I curled up next to each other, and while holding Grace said a pray. We then laid down next to each other a fell asleep in peace. I was in my home, my baby was healthy, I had James by my side and that's all that mattered to me.
