Dreaming of adventure

Prologue

Every now and then James and I like to dream about change.  Not that we really want any change, but if the right moment came we'd be ready for change.

That moment almost happened

Two days ago James' work announced a meeting for all 10 hour PTs.

James came home from work and predicted the possibility that he'd have to change from a 10 hour work day to an 8 hour work day.  Over the last year all new PTs have been 8 hour hires.  So the possibility of this change was possible.

The next day James went to work promising he'd text me if he got any news at the meeting.

This was the text I got;  "I still have a 10 hour job.  Don't worry."

Then he sent me another text.  "What if we bought a big RV and I worked as a traveling Therapist?"

Not knowing exactly where this thought was coming from, I replied.  "I'd totally love it."

and that was the end of short text messaging conversation.

Knowing I'd have to wait another 6 hours to finish this conversation my mind starting humming and ideas and plans where in the making.

List of things to Do:

  • Put trim on the floor, and replace trim around doors
  • Replace bedroom doors
  • Sale the Piano, Beds, Dishes, (we will need dishes that don't brake for the RV)
  • Toys to keep
    • Legos,  American girl dolls, Animals, Wooden trains, and a few board games
  • Sale or donate ALL other toys
    • (okay there would be some negotiations between kids and me about storing a few toys.)
  • Store all books.
    •  (I can't imagine getting rid of our book collection)
  • Go through everyone's closets and choose 7 outfits to keep, a few winter clothes and 3 pairs of shoes.  I could keep 4 dresses/skirts one for every Sunday of the month
    • I wonder if we'd take our temple bags or just rent clothing where we are?
    • Is it bad that i'm even questioning leaving temple clothes?
  • Talk to Jim and Jeanie about RVs
  • Buy a Tablet or a laptop (an RV has limited space)
  • Will probably need to upgrade cell phone coverage since we'll need good coverage across the entire nation.  Probably Verizon.
  • Butcher rabbits, possibly sale cages,
  • Clean out bee boxes, recycle the wax and store for when we return
  • Possible Tents
    • Friend from down the street who is living at home but wanting to rent or buy
    • I would love to have the renters be a referral from someone we know
    • Oh boy renting would be tricky

Things to research:

  • Do we sale the house and use the estimated 70,000.00 profit to buy an RV?
    • The house has new windows, a new roof, a new shed, a new heat pump,  all pluses to selling.
    • It does need some replacement siding and a new paint job.  But that's another story.
  • I need to Find out how much RVs coast?
  • Do we rent out the house and finance the RV?
    • We could use the rent to pay for the mortgage and then use the Housing stipend to pay the RV?
    • Got to find out how much we'd pay in interest. and how much an RV would resell for?
  • We should try to make it work out that the extra money we'd make goes to paying off the student loans.  That would have to be a top priority.

Other random thoughts during my impromptu planning meeting

  • I think we could start as early as June.
  • We could travel for a year or two and then relocate on the Olympic Peninsula.... or where we decide.
  • We should create a wish list of all the places we want to see.
    • AZ should be on the list, what way we can visit will all our friends we haven't seen in a long time.
    • The entire East coast would be a must.
    •  I've always wanted to live in Pennsylvania.... and Ohio,,,, Taxes, Kansas, and California.
    • Oh don't forget Denver, and Utah.  Just in case we ever really do want to move there.
  • Oh think of all the people we'd meet.
    • The stories we'd have.
    • All the blogging we'd do
  • We should do this soon, while all three kids can still share a bed.
    •  They could have the bed that sits over the driver and passenger seat.  And James and I  would share the bed in the back.
  • The RV would have a TV and we'd have so much fun sitting around the kitchen table playing board games in the evening.
  • I'd get really good at learning about new areas and finding cool things to explore.
  • This could be very exciting.
  • Now I just need to find out how serious James is on this matter.

A few hours later when James arrives home

ME: "Where you serious about the traveling therapist job?"

James:  "no, not really. I was just talking to a traveling therapist at work today, with kids."

Me:  "Well I've got it all planned out if you decide you want to."   hahahahahahahahaha

Me again:  "So what was your meeting about?
James:  "Oh they just wanted to get suggestions on how we could be productive and since all the experienced PTs have 10 shifts they asked for our advice."

Epilogue

James and I are very happy where we are.  We love to talk about change and the possibilities but are very happy with all that we have.

I found my thought process to be thought out and yet so sporadic that I wanted to capture the moment.

Who knows maybe someday we'll do it,  but for now, we'll keep the amazing Job, the beautiful little house, the meat rabbits, bees and soon to be chickens, We'll keep the front yard to play in, the friendly neighbors who watch out for us, the fun street to play and explore on.  We'll keep our homeschool co-op, our preschool, and our everyday adventures.

For life is good.

Christmas

Christmas Eve morning James went off to work and I tried frantically to pack and clean the house.
I was trying so hard to have everything done before James got off work so we could go straight to Portland and spend Christmas Eve with Green Grandma.  (James' Paternal Grandmother)

I tried so hard that I didn't take the time to put Everett down for a nap.  While trying to change his diaper that afternoon he was tired and grumpy
I decided not to fight the grump and let him naked on his bed.
A few minutes later when I went back into his room to attempt a diaper change once again I found him past out.

Even in all my efforts I was able to pack, load up the trailer, attach the trailer to the Saturn and tidy up the house before James got off work.  So instead he came home and we did the remaining together as quickly as possible.  Then we raced down to Portland to visit with family.

We got to Green Grandma's house just as the party was winding down.  It actually worked out best.  We saw all the cousins, quickly exchanged gifts and then stayed a little longer to have some alone time with Green Grandma,  Uncle Gary and Grandpa Roemhildt.

I can't begin to tell you how much I love Green Grandma.  She is truly an amazing lady of grace and love.  Gary lit the candles and we sat peacefully in her home visiting.

When it was way past late, we decided we needed to continue on our journey.  We said goodbye and goodnight to Green Grandma, Grandpa Roemhildt and Uncle Gary and then drove to Auntie Tessha and Uncle Patrick's home.

We delivered gifts from Grandma and Grandpa Thomas, toured their lovely home,  (this was James' first time visiting) and visited for a bit.

but the kids were exhausted and it was getting close to midnight.  So we said goodbye to Tessha and Patrick and headed to Red Grandma's house for the night.

James' brothers were patiently waiting for him to play video games.  So when we finally arrived at Red Grandma's house (James Maternal Grandma's house).  I put the kids to bed while James got to work playing hard with his brothers.

After getting all the kids to bed I too was exhausted and could barely keep my eyes open.  instead of waiting up for Santa Claus I decided to fall asleep for a bit.
When the boys were done playing games, James spotted Santa's sleigh outside and came to wake me up.  As Sants slid down the chimney james and I were their to greet him and help him quickly and quietly unpack his sack.  Then as quick as he came he was gone again.  I took pictures of his masterpiece and then James and I climbed in bed for the night.

Christmas morning the kids came into the family room where James and i were sleeping and cuddled up on our bed with us till all three were awake.  Then James went into the living room and turned up some music.  Then the kids marched into the room and saw their Christmas morning.

Gwenevere doing the Kit Kittredge pose.

Everett enjoyed his new trains

After going through stockings, opening a few presents and playing wit the toys Santa gave them everyone decided they were hungry and Grandma needed to get the turkey into the oven.

Watching James interact with his Grandma made me so happy for the future.  He knew she is an independant woman and respected her in all that she did,  But he also watched out for opportunities to help her so that she would not need to ask.  I'm so glad i'll be growing old with him.  He makes it something I can look forward to.

Papa made waffles

After breakfast we played some more opened a few more presents and waited for Uncle Austin to wake up.
Grace and Gwenevere decided that Kit would be Grace's doll and Grace Thomas would be Gwenevere's doll.

Gwenevere loved the purse Papa made for her.

Grandma Sharolee and Grandpa Don gave Everett some books.

Uncle Austin gave Red Grandma an outdoor fire pit which she was very excited for.

Uncle Austin gave Everett a tonka truck.

After all the presents were opened we cleaned up the house and then family began to arrive.
Sure love the big family gatherings.

I volunteer for dinner clean up duty and James took pictures of the pinata.

The evening was wonderful.  I love that Rebecca and Max lingered around later so we were able to visit more with them.

At the end of the evening we packed up our stuff and drove over to Grandpa Roemhildt's house to sleep under his Christmas tree via Grace's request.

It was a wonderful evening.  Grandpa had little surprises for the Grandkids to open.  He sure knows how to give good gifts.  Art supplies, and more trains.  Everyone was so happy.  unfortunately I was so tired I didn't take any pictures, but the Christmas tree lights were beautiful and we all had a wonderful evening watching movies and sleeping under Grandpa's tree.

We returned home from Temple Square around midnight and quietly climbed into bed.  The next morning we got ready for Church and attended the Orem Tangan ward.  What a wonderful ward and culture.

When we got to Church is started to snow.

Kristi gave a beautiful lesson on missionary work and it was nice to attend Relief Society again.

When we got home everyone was exhausted.  We spent the afternoon just chilling.  I really wanted Kristi to take some pictures but with Grace being difficult and refusing to pose for any pictures I decided to pass on the endeavour.

So the kids decorated sugar cookies instead.

Aunt Grace came over to hang out and we stayed up way too late making silly faces with the camera.

I love being in Kristi's home.  the spirit is strong and their is peace all around.

It is obvious that family is important in their home.
their walls are covered in family pictures

I finally went down stairs and repacked our suitcases.

By 10pm  all the kids were asleep.

And at 3am it was time to wake up and drive to the airport.
