Hayley Elizabeth Thomas: Memorial Day Remembrance

a few weeks ago my Sister Tessha sent an e-mail to the family asking if anyone was interested in having a day of remembrance for our niece Hayley.

I've been trying to attend the temple every month and this was yet another excuse to go, so of course I said yes.

I was hoping James and I would attend the Rexburg Temple while we where visiting Idaho Falls but that never happened.

All of a sudden I realized the end of the month was here and I hadn't attended a session.

I had gone to the Idaho Fall open house but I wanted to do more.

Big digression:
Over a year ago I was talking to my brother Seth about the gospel.  I'm not sure the exact content of the discussions but he said something profound that has stuck with me ever since and has led me to several moments of inspiration.  (which has to do with the blog post and I hope.)
He said something along the lines; Do you know why so many of God's children decided to follow Christ and come to earth?  The plan of Salvation is really base on just a few key players.  First you have Christ, Joseph Smith, Abraham and a few other prophets who brought the fullness of the gospel to earth.  Everyone else was able to come to earth and gain experience and receive blessing because of the impact of the Few.  end of his Seth's comment.

When he said this a light bulb went on in my head.  I recalled the sentence in my patriarchal blessing that talks about my rule in the pre-existence.  I was told I helped many who where struggling to gain a testimony of the plan of salvation.  I had always wonder why there where spirits who struggled. But I know Heavenly Father understood there where spirits struggling and he wanted a plan that would help them make the right choice.  Making the plan as easy as possible would help those who had fear, believe.

Later I was reading in the book of Abraham about the many are called but few are chosen.  I always thought that many of us had been asked to do important work on earth but many of us didn't fulfil that work.  This still might be true but this verse had a new meaning to me.  Many are called, meaning many people could have fulfil Abraham, or Joseph Smith's work on this earth but few are chosen.  only a few where needed to make the plan successful.  I really like this idea as well.

We'd all come down to earth, learn and grow and hopefully receive the gospel so we can return to heaven.  But this is when the plan gets beautiful.  In order for any of us to return to heaven we must all be able to return to heaven.

That's when we come in.  In the later days a marvelous work and a wonder will accrue.  A stone cute of the mountain will roll forth and fill the whole earth.   Not just everyone living on the earth but everyone who has ever lived or will live on the earth.  Meaning Temple work.  The whole reason we will have a time period set apart to do temple work before the great judgement day.  The Millennium.   In order for God's plan to be fulfilled we need a time when temptation is bond and all can receive the gospel.  Not all will want the highest degree of heaven but all will be placed where they are fulfilled and happy.  God's plan of happiness.

I've never had the genealogy bug but I told myself I would help in the work by attending the temple regularly and doing as much work as possible.

Back to Hayley:

Hayley came to earth to receive a body but her work was not on this earth.  Her influence in our family has been felt by many and her spirit always seems to have a message of temple work.  I think she's getting excited for the millennium and is trying to help usher in this new dispensation.  (my thoughts alone.)

Last week, my institute class decision was on the millennium.  If you have the time I encourage you to read Chapter 45 in the Gospel Principles Manual.

During our discussion two thoughts stood out to me.

1. During the millennium people will still have their agency, and for a time many will be free to continue with their religions and ideas. Eventually everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is the Savior.

This struck me as interesting.  The Millennium will begin when Christ comes down to rule.  That means while Christ is leading the government of the world there will still be righteous people living on the earth who do not recognize him as our Savior.  The millennium will not be this mass wipeout followed by a crazy new way of life.  although it might be that as well.  However I believe the millennium will be similar to life here on earth as we know it.

This brings me to point number two.

2. Matthew 24:36  But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

During my class, my instructor pointed out that during the millennium Satan will be bond because we will  not heed to his temptations.   Then he share a quote for the prophet Kimball (I'll try to find the exact quote later)
Kimball said that when we cast Satan out of a single home or individual we have started the millennium (or blessing of the millennium) in that home/individual life.

When I read this quote my eye lit up thinking back on the scripture in Matthew about no one knowing the exact time of millennium.  Could it be that the Millennium will only start when enough people want it to start.  D&C 65:3-6 is Joseph Smith encouraging the saint to pray for the millennium.   The modern prophets have repeatedly said the earth is as wicked as it was in the time of Babylon.  I know there are certain prophecies that need to be fulfil but could it be that we are capable of ushering those prophecies and helping the work along?

I dare say so.

In recent weeks I've removed my smart phone from my home.  It has bittersweet consequences.  but while I was attending my institute class and talking about casting out satan and preparing the way for the millennium  The spirit whispered to me that I must remember these things.  And that my choice to remove temptation was a blessing.

Since that week I have felt the power of the adversary in great waves.  Thrashing at my emotional and spiritual door.

I didn't realize all my struggles where related until my friend Sarah Day pointed it out.  Satan will do anything to destroy the plan of happiness.  especially in the home.   He will even use Church leadership to make us question our spiritual promptings.

I know my road is different from others.  I know I have many family and friends who wonder why I walk another path.  And I too often question if my path is right.  But I try to stay prayerful and not let questioning temptations leave me to doubt.  I do know that my path is the right path for me and my family.  Others walking on a different path may also be walking on the right path for them.  I do not wish to judge, I just wish not to be judged.

Now back to Saturday.

Saturday morning I woke up extra early.  Sharolee had kindly agreed to watch my kids at the last minute.  We drove to Longview for the kids to spend time with Grandma while I continued on towards the temple.  Excited to finally fulfil my commitment to Hailey.

As I walked towards the temple my heart was happy.

We had the missionaries over the night before and I had promised them I would share my testimony with someone.

As I walked towards the temple I said a quick prayer asking for a missionary opportunity this day.  (I don't remember the last time I prayed for a missionary opportunity.)

I stopped took a picture and then walked into a temple.  it was busy and beautiful.

When I reached the initiatory center there was a line.  I waited patiently for my turn to talk to the receptionist.  She informed me that temple staff was limited do the busyness of the day and that the wait time for initiatories was an hour long.   I only had an hour or so to do the work and return to my family's needs for the day.

My heart felt heavy.  What was I going to do?  Hayley I tried.

I walked outside the temple and was stumped as what to do.  So I sat and waited.
Not long after, I ran into Rebecca (James' Sister).  She had an hour before her photo session and was just going to hang out around the temple.

We visited for a while and I probably dominated the conversation.  Then it occurred to me.  Here is my moment of testimony sharing.

I shared my thoughts and testimony and did so in honor of Hailey and in reverence honor of my Savior, Jesus Christ.

The day continued as blogged about before.

We met with Grandma Sharolee and saw the show Pinkalicious, we had a wonderful dinner at Pizza Caboose and then we parted ways.

There was still one last thing I needed to do in Portland.

I took the kids to Fred Meyers and let them each pick out some flowers for Hayley's gravesite.

When we found Hayley's head stone Gwenevere commented on how dusty it looked.  funny enough I had a towel in the car and my water in my water bottle.

Gwenevere took great care to clean Hayley's headstone.

To arranged the flowers and took pictures.

I wanted to tell Hayley I was thinking of her.  I wanted her to know how much we love and miss her presence in this life.   I think i'm beginning to understand.

Thank you Tessha for the temple attendance recommendation.  Thank you Seth, brother Manwaring, Sarah Day and others for their guidance in helping me understand my Savior better.

May we all try a little harder to bring in the millennium.

Slight digression:
Last week Gwenevere was encouraged by her Girl Scout troop to do a little family history.  She's been working on her family tree display, learning 3 facts about our family, and counting how many living relatives she has.  It's been a fun project to focus on during this time of adversity. I'll try to post more about her project another day.

Happy Memorial Day!

Sunday blues

So Everett has been attending Nursery with me since he's had a hard time transitioning to sunbeams and all.

Well, I got a phone call the night before we left for Utah asking me to Teach Sunbeams.  I knew this was coming since the primary presidency asked me how they could get Everett to come to sunbeams.

I should have made my thoughts more clear.

I had envisioned me being the sunbeams helper.   That way the current teacher who is way over stressed in her calling would have better support and I could help Everett.

I hated making this suggestion because I love Nursery and the Primary is always having a hard time getting nursery callings filled.

but when I got the call it more like this.

We want you to teach Sunbeams and the current sunbeam teacher to teach nursery.

I was shocked and my heart started racing.  This is not a good idea I thought to myself.  How in the world am i going to teach the crazy sunbeams and help Everett.

I responded nervously "Ok"

The president then went on to tell me that first the sunbeams on in the primary room, then they go to their class and then they go back to the primary room.

I got even more worried.

the class time was only 35 minutes.  that means I get to struggle to keep my kids reverent in the primary room for 1 hour and 20 minutes.  YIKES.

I asked if there was any way we could change things up a bit.

The reply was simple  "nope".

We hung up the phone and I began to cry.  only I couldn't bring myself to tears so I just sat dumbfounded.

Thankfully I had two weeks in which I had planned to be in Utah and Idaho.  That gave me two weeks to pray about this calling.

My first thought was, what if I teach sunbeams and let Everett stay in Nursery.  I like this idea a little bit.  I'd be able to set up a routine with my sunbeam class and not have to worry about Everett.

My second thought was... my primary presidency would hate that.

My Sister Laura who happens to be in her Primary presidency told me all the reasons I need to have Everett in Sunbeams and how I need to be a better parent to get him there.  She had some good points but how do I do that and teach and work with a primary who isn't willing to work with me?

Plan B.

Run away.

When we returned home from Idaho,  I had my cell phone disconnected.  I felt overwhelmed and unsure what to do.

When Sunday came again.  I told James I didn't want to go to church.  So we took a family trip to the Washington Coast.

Some amazing friends reached out to me and gave me strength when I was (still am) weak.

other friends teased me for not having a phone and not standing up for myself.  That was a bit harder to bare.

I contacted the second councilor in the bishopric.  I shared with him my concerns and he said he'd talk the primary presidency and let me know.   He was very supportive but did tell me that we all need to take turns with primary callings.
I wanted to say "I HAVE.  I've been in Primary for three years while other moms my age flat out refuse primary callings because they don't want to be around kids.  they are around them all week."

But I kept my mouth shut.

I had hopes I could serve in another area in Primary (achievement days).  and the second councilor was optimistic too.

When Sunday came again and I still hadn't heard back from the Second councilor I was very worried to go to church.

I had no lesson planned for sunbeams, I had no idea what was expected of me and I wasn't sure if I could take all that might come.

But I knew it wasn't going to get any better until I tried to make it better.

We made it to church.

My friend's sunbeam came up to me excited and said "you're going to teach my class today!"

I guess last week because I didn't show up some parents had to step in and teach.  this poor friend of mine was one of those parents.

My friend came up to me and said so are you teaching sunbeams.  I shook my head no.  She was shocked.  "Who is?"  she asked.  I replied "I don't know." Then she took her kid to class.

I got up to take Grace to primary and she started grabbing my leg and saying "Mom you come with me to Primary, you be in my class."

I knew if I went with Grace into the primary room there would be expectations that I stay and help.  I knew Grace wouldn't want to sit with her class and Everett was already telling me he wasn't going to go to Primary.

I asked James for help but he was busy.

I walked the halls with my kids not knowing what to do.  If I went with them (my kids) to Primary, they  would get what they want and act out.

instead, I took them to a quiet room and we stayed there for the last two hours.  We listened to church music, read scriptures and I cried big fat lonely tears of failure.

James came into the room wanting to help.

The primary president came into the room twice inviting us to primary.  She never asked if I was okay or if she could help.  You could tell she was frustrated with the situation.

The two moms who stepped in to help in Primary also came in to invite us to their unprepare crazy classroom.  It was a nice thought but I felt so overwhelmed I didn't want to socialize with other moms who where upset that I wasn't stepping up to the call.

We made it through the church.

We came home, we rested and we will try again.

Random happiness and Pinkalicious,

After being gone for two weeks and then going camping the following weekend.  We've also enjoyed some relaxation time in between adventures.

Morning reading time/ cuddling her favorite bunny.

Gwenevere making pumpkin pie all by herself for her Girl Scout troop.
Since we've been missing play school we invited our friends over for some fun Science projects.  I think Everett was the most excited.  We made two kinds of volcanoes and tied the experiments into our recent trip to Creators of the moon.

Confession time.  With the warm weather coming we've had to make some major attempts to spring clean the entire house.  Flea season is back in full swing.  We try to keep our cats up to date with flea meds but poor Finn seems to have all the odds against him.  This year he's struggling with ringworms too.  On friday we deep cleaned Grace and Everett's room.  The kids had a lot of fun.  Who knew wiping down walls and vacuuming mattresses would be so much fun.  So glad I have these fun kids to enjoy life's chores.

Saturday James had to work but Grandma Sharolee invited us to a Theatrical performance of Pinkalicious.
I took the kids to Grandma's house early Saturday morning.  Then raced down to the temple to do some initiatories.  onfutantely the temple was super busy and I wouldn't have enough time to wait for an hour to do some initiatories.  I was so sad.  I had wanted to do the work in honor of my niece Hailey Elizabeth Thomas.   I think i'm beginning to understand the vision of temple work.  It's so exciting. I had attempted to attend the temple every month and although I wasn't able to do temple work I felt blessed to be able to try.

I met Rebecca outside the temple and we had an hour to visit.  Rebecca patiently let me share my testimony on my new sound vision of temple work.  Before going to the temple I prayed I could share my testimony with someone and Rebecca help fulfil my prayer.  Thanks Becca.

After a visit with Rebecca a snuck over to Desert book store and treated myself to an audio book.

Then I drove back to Max and Rebecca's home where I met back up with Sharolee and the kids.

Grandma Sharolee packed a wonderful lunch.  We read pinkalicious while we ate lunch and drove to the theater.

We made it to down town Portland, parked and managed to get all 5 kids across the street.  Victory.

The shiney pink stage
After the show Grace asked to get their autographs.  A big deal for my shy girl.  when it came to taking pictures she shyed away.  But she's held onto their autographs day and night ever since.

The Cast
After the show Grandma Sharolee treated us to some yummy pizza from Pizza Caboose.

their favorite entertainment

After dinner we seperated.  I took the kids to see Hailey's grave site (i'll post about that next) and Grandma took Rebecca's boys back to her home.

As we finished our errands in Portland we started our drive back to Tacoma.  We had to stop a few times for bathroom breaks and clean ups but we where on our way.

as we where driving through longview an hour later than we anticipated I asked the girls if we should go straight home or stop by Grandma's house one more time.  The vote was unanimous.

When we arrived Grandma had popsicles waiting.  The kids where in heaven.

Everett's art work

At last it was time to go home.  we made it home around midnight excited to see James we ended up talking for a while before going to sleep.

Spontaneous adventure to the Hoh Rainforest

Sunday we woke up bright and early.  I had expressed the night before how I didn't want to go to Church so when I woke up James was researching a possible family camping trip.

He had monday off and we had spend the weekend cleaning the house so the idea of going camping excited the whole family.

Inspired by my friends facebook post about the Hoh Rainforest.  We decided to make our way to the coast.  I have always wanted to go to the Hoh Rainforest and this seemed as good as ever to have that adventure.

We quickly packed the truck and began our adventure.

By later afternoon we found ourselves at the Kalaloch campground
Gwenevere really really wanted to pick out campsite.  She found the perfect spot right next to another camper.  I saw that mama look and knew it wasn't a good idea to pitch a tent right next to her camp site especially because there where other sites vacant.

James and Gwenevere went to explore the campsite Gwenevere had picked out.
a few minutes later Gwenevere had decided on another campsite.

We unloaded the truck and started setting up camp.  The kids explored the woods, help set up the tent and get everything ready.

Then we decided to explore the beach that was just a few feet away.

When everyone was wet and cold.  We went back to the campsite and got ready for dinner.  James started a fire and we roasted hotdogs.  Everett loved playing (safely) in the fire.

After dinner I took the kids back to the beach to watch the sunset.  We saw porpoise air spouts.  Then we went back to the campsite and James took the kids to the beach while I stay and tended the fire.

james and the kids arrived back at camp right at dusk.  We sat by the fire for a bit and the brushed teeth and climbed into the tent. James read Stuart Little as we all fell fast asleep.

The next morning I kept waiting to here James outside our tent starting the fire and getting breakfast ready.  But it never happened.  Soon Everett and Grace where awake so we venture outside our tent to find Papa.

James was still asleep.  I started the fire and the kids helped me keep the flames going.  We set the kettle near the fire and waited for James to woke up.

When James woke up he prepared breakfast then we all took town camp.

Happy camper face

By 10;30 we where leaving our campground and off on another adventure.  On our way to the Hoh Rainforest information center we found a big spruce tree.

Finally we made it to the Hoh Rainforest National information center.  We ate lunch and took a small hike through the woods.

Then we started our 3 hour drive back home.  But we didn't get very far.  We arrived at ruby beach and had to splash some more before going home.

It was a perfect trip.  We returned home exhausted and ready for another week to begin.
