Climbing Saddle Mountain: Accomplishing a family goal

Last year when I was extremely pregnant I had a big fat craving to climb Saddle Mountain with the girls.  Thankfully James talked me out of that idea but promised we'd do a family climb soon.  So after Everett was born I made it a family goal to climb Saddle Mountain at some point this year.  Well, with James' week off of work, we couldn't miss this perfect opportunity to give the hike a try.  We had spent most of May getting the girls ready, going on family hikes around town and telling them they had to walk everywhere.  Both girls where super excited to hike up the Mountain and see where Papa proposed.

We left OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) Tuesday afternoon and started our drive out to the coast.  We all started to get hungry before long so we stopped by Fred Meyer's to pick up so food.

who knew bathrooms could be so much fun
We got to camp around 5 pm and Papa went to work making us feel right at home.  The girls ate mac and cheese and hot chocolate for dinner ( because hot chocolate is a must when camping). Papa also set up his hammock which provided great entertainment and was lots of fun for everyone. Then Papa took the girls exploring while I put Everett to bed.  When they got back we brushed teeth and put the girls to bed.  James and I enjoyed a nice little fire under the stairs before going to bed ourselves.

The next morning we woke up, ate some oatmeal and headed out on our adventure.

The beginning of the trail is absolutely breathtaking.
In the first half hour, we found some great walking sticks (aka swords) to help us on our way.  We discovered quickly that if we where talking about stuff that the girls where interested in they would walk faster and without complaints.  Hence most of the first half of our walk consisted of conversations about Ninja Turtles and Halloween costumes.

We took several stops along the way and explored different views from the trail.  Gwenevere had lots of fun taking pictures of all the different flowers she found along the way.  (I'll post them later).

The Proposal Point
When we made it to the Proposal Point I was hit with a wave of emotion.  Papa and Grace and Gwenevere where ahead of me, watching them hike the last few feet towards the top was incredible.  A wave of victory flooded my body.  I was so excited we made it to this point together.  We set up the camera and took some pictures, then Papa told the girls the story of our proposal and we all just sat around enjoying this special moment.  The girls where doing great and we talked shortly about continuing up the mountain.  But the last few hundred feet we had climbed was a bit scary (steeper drop offs, loose gravel) and we knew the rest of the trail would only get worse.  So we decided that this was good enough.  We started our trip back down the mountain.

The spot where papa purpose.

It was only a matter of minutes before Grace was fast asleep as we trekked down the Mountain.

Gwenevere's edible hairdo.  Got to love those lemon leaves.
We made it back down the mountain in one piece, packed up camp and headed towards Cape Disappointment for our next adventure.
